1.Fleetwood Mac – because I think BoysnLove is not not country.. Also I love to have a bunch of harmonies in my songs, so I’ve chosen ‘The Chain’ for my playlist song choice, because in a similar way to ‘Honeymoon Diver’ there’s an energy and an upbeat element to the song, but its, at its core, tragic.
2. Angel Olsen- ‘Heart Shaped Face’ I listened to this song about 1 million times, and she really gave me a license to yell.
3.Phoebe Bridgers – ‘Smoke Signals’ I was listening to a lot at the time, and I think the way she writes this song as a sort of letter style whoever the song is about, is similar to how ‘Honeymoon Diver’ ended up coming out.
4. Aldous Harding – ‘Damn’ – I was listening to this track over and over again at the time, and though there’s not much resemblance, Aldous always gets me in the mood to write a song, she’s so moody and thoughtful in her lyrics.
5. Georgia Mulligan – ‘ Stay’ in particular but also in general, she has this way of making a song groovy and miserable at the same time, and I that’s definitely something I was trying to achieve with ‘Honeymoon Diver.’ She also sang on this track with me, so that helps add to the moody vibe of the song.
6. Paul McCartney – ‘Another Day’ – made the list because I’m always listening to the Beatles or McCartney, and this song has that real chugging sound to it that I think ‘Honeymoon Diver’ emulates a bit, and then also crashes into a sad change.
7. Cardi B – ‘ Thru Your Phone’ A bit left of field, but I love her sad songs, they’re so honest and raw, and I find them really inspiring, they hurt my heart, and that always makes me want to write a song.
8. Charlie Gradon – ‘Grieving’ – I love how melodic all the songs are on his EP Blurry Ones, and I was seeing a lot of his shows at the time, and all of his songs swell to this point that make me want to die a little bit- I always walk away from his shows feeling like I want to write, his songs stir something up in me.
9. Human Noise – ‘Flesh Wound’ – Again, I was seeing Human Noise play constantly, and all their songs were swirling around in my head. They’re like power ballads hidden in rock songs. They inspired the idea of hiding a meaning in the song, often I just put it all out there, but this time I tried to hide betrayal in a metaphor.
10. The Magnetic Fields - ‘ I Don’t Want to Get Over You’ – because I’m such a goddamn hopeless romantic.
Honeymoon Diver is available now on all music platforms and is definitely worthy of being added to your spring 2022 playlist. Go stream now!
