LOVELOVELOVE “Holding On” Review

By Riley Grannell

LOVELOVELOVE is a Brisbane based indie-pop duo ready to take Australia by storm, with an  upcoming EP releasing later in the year and their single Holding On releasing on Aril 8th. This review  is for their upcoming single, a fantastic first taste of their upcoming EP.

Holding On is a heart bumping, toe tapping single with a deep powerful message underneath. The  use of intricate synths and electronic instrumentation lends to the heartfelt and beautiful melodies  and vocals on display. It all works in conjunction with one another, creating a fantastic electro-pop

piece of art. The chorus is loud, unapologetic and powerful, really bringing out those synths and  electronics, with a steady heartbeat style of rhythm that guarantees you’ll be bopping your head  along with the beat.

As their second single released, it does two things extraordinarily well, firstly, it keeps up the  momentum and passion prevalent in their single ‘Smalltowns’ and most importantly, really allows  the duo to step into their stride and truly hone their sound as something unique, with an amazing  mix to add to the depth of the song itself. The particular message on display in ‘Holding on’ is  incredibly prevalent and one that any young adult can latch onto as they transcend into a new stage  of their life. Holding on to the important lessons our past experiences teach us, as well as learning to  let go of the things that hold us back, is in itself, something we will all struggle with in our own personal way.

The beauty of the song does not just come from the poignant lyrics, but also the absolutely  astonishing level of craftsmanship on display, not only just in the mix, but also with the choice of  instrumentation. Being able to strip the song back to its basics for the bridge or build the energy  during the chorus gives ‘Holding on’ an edge against its genre specific counterparts. An example I will  use to highlight this mastery is specifically in the beginning of the chorus, with what can only be  described as a ‘bubble’ type of synth that pops its way from the left ear to the right, leading directly  into the wonderfully upbeat chorus. Amazing little touches like that just go to add to the authenticity  and love the duo is displaying so meticulously, that it cannot be helped that I find myself patiently  and eagerly awaiting the arrival of their EP.

It astonishes me how powerful and well thought out this single is, down to every tiny minute detail  in the mix or instrumentation that you would not even catch on your first, second or even fifth time  listening. LOVELOVELOVE has started their wonderful music career extraordinarily strong.
