What is the Something Different Project?

Written by founder Gabi Rankine

I felt it’s about time to tell the story of how TSDP became a thing. The Something Different Project has held a close place in my heart and been a very special project I had on the back burner for many years. I originally came up with the concept of #somethingdifferentproject back in 2017. I knew I wanted to create a platform for artists alike to share art of all kinds, not just photos or videos but something for everyone, something different.

I was a fresh 13 year old who had only just begun playing with my parents old camera, not knowing what I wanted to do or make of my 'art’ at the time. But Something Different Project was a name I held on to for a long time, knowing when the time was right, that’s what I wanted to call it.

I’m 18 years old now, having worked full time in the music scene since I was 14 as a live music photographer and more recently, a creative director. Growing up and making my own way within the Brisbane Music Scene from such a young age with minimal recourses, I had a lot to learn. From working hard and trying to gain experience, after dozens upon dozens of emails, some band managers, a local radio station and a few music venues in the Brisbane valley let me work. I slowly built a name for myself and a portfolio.

I learnt how to network, how to slowly build a business, make connections and eventually make money from my work. As an underage photographer I had to get venue and band approval before every, single, gig. It was tedious but I hustled.

Alongside sharing the art and love I quickly realised that the only way to survive in the music and creative scene is to support one another. Without locals supporting locals, so many of us wouldn’t make it. We thrive of each others support, commitment and sharing knowledge.

The Something Different Project was officially launched in September 2021. It’s new and only purpose..to support local. As a fresh and new artist, it can be so challenging to find someone to take a chance on you, let you explore your creativity and learn as you go. Especially with little to no previous experience or portfolio to show.

I created the publication so we can host events like we have had this year collaborating with FlutterFolk. Bringing likeminded artists of all mediums into one space, live music, markets, live painting, and so much more. Not only the events but also to give creatives a chance to learn, we’re the foot in the door into the creative scene.

I created this publication so people can learn. If you’ve never interviewed a band or an EP before and just want to give it a go, have someone to guide you through learning how to write, take live or studio photos or simply build up a portfolio and gain some recognition, the purpose of this project is to help people get the recourses they need quicker.

This industry is such a competitive place that can be hard to find your way, or simply to find someone to take a chance on you. So that’s why we exist!

If you’ve made it this far and want to get involved I’d love to hear from you. Share some art! Join the team! Or simply have a chat, we’re always keen. See the contact us page!

Hope you have a wonderful Christmas break, I know I can say i’m so stoked for the new opportunities and experiences 2023 has to offer.
